Fireworks at City Council in Quesnel

MORE ALLEGATIONS OF MISSPENDING AGAINST QUESNEL MAYOR MARY SJOSTROM, ONLY THIS TIME FROM A PRIVATE CITIZEN.

PAT MORTON IS QUESTIONING THE MAYOR’S INTERPRETATION OF THE 1/3RD TAX FREE EXPENSE ALLOWANCE MUNICIPAL POLITICIANS GET.

MORTON HAS MADE A SERIES OF INFORMATION REQUESTS TO STAFF AND WANTED TO KNOW WHY SOME THINGS WEREN’T BEING SUPPLIED.

THE ISSUE CAME TO A HEAD AT MONDAY NIGHT’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING DURING QUESTION PERIOD WHEN MAYOR SJOSTROM WANTED TO KNOW WHY MORTON WAS INTERESTED IN HER PERSONAL PHONE RECORDS.

MORTON NOTED THAT IT WAS TAXPAYERS WHO WERE PAYING FOR IT AND THAT SHE SHOULD BE PAYING BACK ANY MONEY SPENT ON PERSONAL CALLS.

MORTON SAYS ALL IN-TOWN EXPENSES ARE COVERED UNDER THE 1/3RD TAX EXEMPTION.

FOR HER PART, MAYOR SJOSTROM SAYS THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TRANSPARENCY BUT IS INSTEAD A PERSONAL ISSUE AND A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST HER.

SHE ACCUSED MORTON OF DRAGGING THE NEW COUNCIL INTO AN OLD ISSUE ADDING THAT IT WAS TIME TO MOVE FORWARD.

A MOTION WAS ALSO MOVED BY COUNCIL TO INVESTIGATE THE COST AND THE AMOUNT OF STAFF TIME DEDICATED TO MORTON’S REQUESTS.

COUNCILLOR SHUSHIL THAPAR HAS CRITIZED THE MAYOR’S SPENDING IN THE PAST AS WELL.
