Rick Hansen Relay

The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay is coming to town on March 22, 2012. The heart of the 25th Anniversary Relay is to recognize and celebrate  the amazing individuals across the country who are making a difference and who mirror Rick's values.

We have several local heroes in Quesnel, just to name a few:

Landon MaGauley,  will be the final medal bearer, delivering it up Reid  Street  to Spirit Square.  Landon is an amazing young fellow who was injured in a mountain biking accident in July of 2010.  The High Fives Non-Profit Foundation ( this organization is dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life altering injury while pursuing their dream in the winter action sports community).   They contacted Landon and the Landon McGauley Project started.  He is now a member of the BC Para Alpine Team with hopes of participating in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Russia.

Trevor Adelman, the lead singer from the band Rockin' Chair, is providing entertainment at Spirit Square after the formal ceremony on March 22, 2012.  Trevor was injured in a single vehicle accident in August  2004. He also races cars.   In March, Trevor and the band are opening for the Aaron Pritchett concert in Hinton, AB and while there Trevor is visiting two high schools to tell his story.

Lynn Turner is a real difference maker in our community.  She silently promotes accessible awareness in Quesnel and is a medal bearer for the relay.  Lynn is a member and peer volunteer of the BC Paraplegic Association, as well as an Ambassador the the Rick Hansen Foundation.

The End Of Day Celebration is taking place at Spirit Square at approximately 5:00 pm Thursday, March 22, 2012.  The Rick Hansen Team will host a 20 - 30 minute  formal ceremony.  Quesnel City Council and the CRD is hosting this event and will be present.  Entertainment is provided on the stage with a few surprises in the mix.

The Wheelchair Sports team will demonstrate wheelchair basketball, rugby and tennis as QJS, March 22, 2012 from 1 pm - 5 pm.  The public can participate in all activities.

Greg Sween the original carver of the Rick Hansen carving is refurbishing it and the carving will be unveiled at he event.

Celebrating the Anniversary the Quesnel Visitor Centre is looking for memories, photos, stories and any memorabilia you wish to share.  The Centre is hosting a display and all items will be returned.    The first ten drop offs will receive a thank you gift.  Please drop your memories at The Visitor Centre, 703 Carson Avenue between 9:00am – 4:00pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
